When I put together my first adoptive parent profile, the subjects I focused on were our jobs, our house, and basic security-driven issues. When my friends redesigned my profile for me, they went a completely different direction. Here are the types of information they included:
Our Childhoods
It never would have occurred to me to include childhood pictures of my husband and me, but starting off with pictures of our childhood really set a wonderful tone for our profile. My husband’s spread included pictures of him doing the following:
- Riding in a wagon
- Posing with his older brother
- Standing in a flower shop
- Graduating from college
Information about his career was weaved into this spread by saying:
Posing with his proud mom, the graduate had visions of law school in his head.
In this way, we told the placing mother that my husband was a lawyer in a more subtle manner.
My spread included several baby pictures, a few in my childhood, and one as a teenager with my puppy. Information about my life was revealed through captions, such as —
In elementary school, Faith discovered that she loved music and writing stories to read to her younger sister.
Our Courtship and Wedding
The next two-page spread showed pictures of us taken as a couple at various events, including the night we got engaged. There were also pictures from our wedding with specific details, such as —
We couldn’t help ourselves. The lemon and butter cream cake was too good!
Vacations
Next were a couple of two-page spreads showing pictures from our honeymoon and other vacations. One picture showed my husband juggling at a beach house. The first spread showed just the two of us. The second spread included pictures with extended family.
Our House
We included pictures of our house, making sure that we were in every picture. In my first profile, I included some pictures of our house without either of us in the shot. One placing mother commented, “What good is a picture of just a house?” She wasn’t looking to match with a building: She was considering a family.
Our Extended Family
The next two-page spread showed pictures of us playing with our nephews and included specific information about them, including their names and their hobbies. The placing mother could see how much we loved our nephews in the photos.
Our Pets
The last page of our profile included a couple of pictures of us walking our dogs. It talked about how our dogs were part of our family but that we were ready to grow our family to include a child. This ended our profile on a positive note, particularly for my son’s birthmother, who really loved our dogs.
These are just suggestions for content to include. Choose information that opens up your life to the placing mother. Share the things that make you the people you are.
