It is so nice to read a heart-warming adoption story in the news. Here is a summary of the article Doctor Offers Orphan Greatest Gift by Maila Rible, Web Producer:
Arkansas Children's Hospital surgeon Dr. Lisa Buckmiller and her husband, Richard Hinkle, adopted six-year-old Gong Lu after the child came to the United States for facial surgery. Dr. Buckmiller, who performed the surgery, fell in love with the little girl and chose to adopt her. Gong Lu needed surgery to remove a birthmark called a hemangioma. According to webmd.com…
Hemangiomas are raised, blue, red, or purple birthmarks formed by a clump of immature blood vessels.
Gong Lu’s hemangioma was disfiguring to her face and could have interfered with her breathing if not surgically treated. Who knew that the child would find much more than surgical care when Dr. Buckmiller agreed to perform the surgery?
Dr. Buckmiller says that, after the surgery, she felt that she was supposed to adopt the child. The adoptive parents described the adoption process as “tedious” but “worth it.” The child is now learning English and is keeping her parents busy.
Before coming to the United States, the child experienced third-degree burns when boiling water fell on her at her orphanage. Her birthmarks are gone, but she will have to endure more surgeries to reconstruct her nose. As a mother of a six-year-old child myself, I cannot imagine my child enduring so many surgeries at such a young age.
This story is such a heart-warming one to me. I do believe that some people are meant to come together as a family. What an amazing story that a doctor would perform a surgery on an orphaned child in another country and wind up falling in love with her. When I think about all of the factors that had to come together for THIS doctor to perform THIS surgery on THIS little girl, I am in awe of the way that life can come together. This story is truly a miracle and warms my heart.
