As Mother’s Day approaches, your emotions will likely be all over the map. One day, you might feel okay. The next you might feel angry. Then you might feel hopeless, out of control, or sad. You might feel different emotions on different days, or you might feel several emotions at one time. All of this is normal. The most important thing to remember is that it is okay to feel whatever you are feeling. Express and honor your feelings in safe (non-destructive) ways, and they will pass faster.

Emotions are meant to be expressed. It is when we deny our emotions or stuff them down inside that they start to do damage. You don’t ever have to act on your feelings – that is where the power of choice comes into play. It is okay to be very angry with someone. You can express your anger by punching pillows rather than by punching the person in the nose. After you have honored your anger by punching pillows, you will feel better. The anger will no longer burn inside of you, converting into anxiety or depression when left unexpressed. Once an emotion is out of your soul, it loses its power over you.

One of the secrets of emotional healing is that expressed emotions lose their power. Many people are afraid to express powerful emotions because they are afraid of them. The longer the emotions are held inside, the more powerful they become. What could have been expressed as annoyance festers inside until it explodes out of you later as full-fledged rage. Suppressed emotions only grow stronger; expressed emotions cease to hold any power over you.

This series will discuss emotions that you might be feeling as Mother’s Day approaches and you are still waiting to adopt. My purpose in writing this series is to…

  • Reassure you that these feelings are normal and that you are not alone

  • Encourage you to express your emotions so that they lose their power over you

  • Provide you with practical ways to safely express your emotions without causing yourself or others any harm
