BlogIf you’re not already reading these blogs, you should be. There are so many adoption-related blogs on the Intertubes (as my husband, channeling Ted Stevens, calls them). A lot of them chronicle the individual adoption journeys of adoptive parents. I did one of those. I think it might be a requirement in some states. (That’s a joke.) They can be nifty to read. However, there are some adoption-related blogs that are a lot more than those stories. They make me think. They make me challenge my preconceptions. I can truly say I’ve learned a lot from them.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the other blogs at AdoptionBlogs.com. I ask you to look at some of the blogs that you don’t think apply to you. Perhaps the Birth/First Parent blog, or the Transracial Adoption blog. I think you’d be surprised to find out how much you can relate to your life.

  Adoption Services

When it comes to life outside adoption.com, there are two blogs that I believe are far and away the best.

Chronicles of Munchkinland is written by our very own Jenna, a first mother in an open adoption. I really cannot stress enough how reading Munchkinland opened my eyes when it comes to birth/first mothers. I always thought that, if adoption is the best idea for the child before she’s born, then it’s the always the best idea after. Jenna made me realize how shortsighted that is. She makes me think a lot more about the ethics of adoption. She writes from the heart, and she writes extremely well.

This Woman’s Work is written by Dawn Friedman, an adoptive mother in a very open adoption. Dawn doesn’t just record the milestones of her journey – which she acknowledges as neverending – she tackles the emotions involved for her family, including her daughter and her daughter’s first mother. Dawn is also an excellent writer, and a strong voice for adoption reform.

Coming in right after that is Production, Not Reproduction, by Heather, an adoptive mom in two open adoptions. Heather is the hostess of the Open Adoption Roundtable, in which some bloggers here take part. Her children’s adoptions are somewhat different, and I really like the perspective she has because of it. She can also be highly entertaining.

Finally, a few more blogs worth your consideration:

  • Grown in My Heart is a blog I started reading only recently. So far, I’ve found it to be thought provoking and well written. I appreciate that there are different writers and different points of view.
  • Creating a Family is written by a different Dawn, who hosts a radio show of the same name. I find the topics to be interesting and varied.
  • BirthMom Buds is a blog written by several birth mothers who belong to the group BirthMom Buds. I think it’s important for adoptive parents to think about issues from the birth/first parents’ perspectives.

I hope you take a moment to give some other blogs a chance. If you have any favorites, please share!
