Sunday we had yet another opportunity to hang out with a little girl. We accidentally ended up watching an acquaintance’s daughter at the pool in my mom’s subdivision. The little girl’s name is Zoe and she’s about 6 months younger than my youngest son. She just happens to be adopted from China, but that’s really beside the point. We had a lot of fun with her! She is a very articulate and lively child, but lively in a different way than my son – she made me think of a little cricket or maybe a fairy, whereas my son is more of a berserker or maybe a hyperactive linebacker. First she was here — then there. My mom, who had been appointed chief babysitter, really had to work hard to watch her.

What I found most interesting about little Miss Z. is that she so resembles her mother. I have known her mother for about six years, always as an acquaintance, once, briefly, as a boss. The woman is a free spirit. She speaks her mind freely. She and her husband are their own bosses and seem like fully evolved people – both are therapists and they’ve obviously dealt with whatever they need to deal with. Zoe seemed like them. An accepting, free-thinking type, although not as good a listener!

I told my older son that we could get a little girl like her and he grinned and nodded. My husband groaned from his position on the lounge chair – “she acts just like Little J!” he said. Sometimes I think he’s 36 going on 65…but I know he’ll come around. The more little girls we’re around the more he’ll see that we need one to round out our family.

Got a little girl we can borrow for a while? I’ve got a husband to convince.
